Johannesburg – Gauteng’s public healthcare system is losing more than 100 nurses every month as professionals move to private hospitals or seek opportunities overseas, the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) says.
DENOSA Gauteng secretary Bongani Mazibuko told Newzroom Afrika that stagnant salaries, poor working conditions and outdated professional frameworks were driving nurses away.
“One of the biggest challenges that we’ve got is that we had OSD implemented in 2007, and since then it has never been reviewed,” Mazibuko said.
He said nurses were also struggling with severe staff shortages, with some clinics seeing more than 50 or 60 patients per nurse.
“There have been instances … where one nurse is responsible for more than 14 or 15 patients in a ward,” he said.
Mazibuko called for the urgent filling of more than 2,000 nursing vacancies and a review of the salary structure.
“You cannot sit with vacancies of more than 2,000 nurses and then say that you are still planning to employ,” he said.
He warned that continued loss of skilled nurses could worsen the country’s healthcare challenges and undermine the implementation of National Health Insurance.
