A head-on collision between a minibus taxi and a bakkie on the N2 at Sibangweni Village just outside of Mthatha has claimed two lives.

Both vehicles caught alight after the impact.

There were also school children in the minibus.

Nineteen people were injured, some with critical injuries.

An eyewitness who responded to the crash, Abongile Ngozi, says some of the victims also suffered burn wounds.

“We have been able to retrieve all the passengers before the vehicles caught alight. There was a truck that gave us a fire extinguisher. We were able to remove the people. Emergency people like police, ambulances and traffic officials from KSD they are here and the scene is being managed.”
