Rabat – Two US service members taking part in the African Lion 2026 have been reported missing near the Cap Draa training area, close to the southern city of Tan-Tan, according to a statement from the US Mission Morocco.

The incident occurred on May 2, prompting an immediate and coordinated response involving US, Moroccan, and other participating forces in the multinational exercise.

Search and rescue operations are currently underway, mobilizing ground teams alongside air and maritime units to locate the missing personnel.

Authorities have not disclosed further details about the circumstances surrounding the disappearance. Officials confirmed that an investigation is ongoing as search efforts continue.

“Our focus is on the service members involved and their families,” the statement said.

African Lion is one of the largest joint military exercises on the continent, bringing together forces from multiple countries to strengthen cooperation and readiness across land, air, and sea operations.
