UWP calls for audit of St Jude Hospital reconstruction

The opposition United Workers Party is asking for an audit of the reconstructed St Jude Hospital.

A devastating fire destroyed St. Jude’s Hospital in Vieux Fort on September 9, 2009, resulting in three deaths.

The hospital was later moved “temporarily” to the Vieux Fort sports stadium, where it still operates 17 years later.

On November 16, 2025, the contractor handed over a new St. Jude’s building to the government. But the building is not fully operational as a hospital, even though there was a promise to finish moving from the stadium by July this year.

In a statement this week, the UWP said, “Seventeen years later, Saint Lucians are still awaiting both a fully functioning general hospital and a comprehensive public accounting of the decisions, expenditure and delays associated with its reconstruction.”

The UWP says the St Jude project has continued under several governments and should not be seen as the responsibility of just one political party.

“The UWP is therefore calling for a comprehensive, independent and non-partisan audit of the entire St Jude reconstruction project across successive administrations,” the statement read.

The UWP says the audit should examine the decisions made, contracts awarded, money spent, changes made, delays and the total cost to the people of Saint Lucia.
