UWP Raises Alarm Over ‘Politicisation’ of Jazz Festival, Calls for Clear Standards

The opposition United Workers Party (UWP) is raising concerns over what it describes as the increasing politicisation of Saint Lucia’s premier cultural showcases, warning that the trend risks undermining the event’s national unity.

In a press release dated May 4, 2026, the UWP pointed to a widely circulated video from the festival’s opening at Mindoo Phillip Park, where a politically charged song was played in the presence of senior government officials, including the Prime Minister.

While acknowledging that cultural events often carry a degree of spontaneity, the UWP argued that “the use of overtly political content in a national space of this nature raises important questions,” particularly given the festival’s public funding and its role as a unifying platform.

The party further claimed that the incident was not isolated, referencing a similar occurrence at a Jazz event in Anse La Raye, where it says the stage was also used to advance partisan messaging. According to the UWP, this emerging pattern “heightens concern and underscores the need for clear standards.”

At the heart of the party’s argument is the principle that national events—especially those supported by taxpayers must remain inclusive spaces. “All citizens, regardless of political affiliation [should] feel equally respected and included,” the statement emphasized.

The UWP is now calling for clarification on the guidelines governing performances at publicly supported events, and whether steps will be taken to ensure such platforms remain free from partisan influence.

The statement also drew a contrast between the incidents and recent calls for national unity, suggesting that such messages must be reflected not only in rhetoric but in action, particularly during high-visibility national celebrations.

Meanwhile the situation has also sparked debate online. A popular Tiktoker also condemned the divisive music noting that it was not only inappropriate but distasteful for such an international event.
