WATCH | ‘Leave me alone’: Witness details screams heard before Anele Tembe’s death

Cape Town – A witness in the Anele Tembe inquest has told the Cape Town Magistrate’s Court that he heard a woman shouting “leave me alone” and “get away from me” shortly before she fell to her death from the 10th floor of the Pepperclub Hotel.

Three witnesses took the stand on Wednesday as the inquest into Tembe’s death resumed.

The inquest began on Monday, when six witnesses testified about the events surrounding the 22-year-old’s death in April 2021. Proceedings were then postponed because some witnesses were unavailable.

According to IOL, the court has also issued an order preventing the livestreaming, filming or recording of witnesses, as well as the publication of their names, unless they consent.

One witness testified that he heard what sounded like a heated argument between a man and a woman coming from Tembe and Kiernan “AKA” Forbes’ hotel room.

He said the woman then screamed “leave me alone” and “get away from me”, followed by what he described as a wailing sound and a loud bang.

Another witness, a hotel guest, told the court he heard a woman screaming before a loud bang. He initially thought the sound was from a vehicle accident.

When he went out on to his balcony, he saw Tembe’s body on the ground.

The court heard that Forbes then went out on to the balcony as if he was looking for someone. He leaned over the railing, saw Tembe’s body and shouted: “Oh my God.”

The witness said he was the person who called an ambulance after seeing Tembe on the ground.

The court has also heard evidence about an argument between Tembe and Forbes before her fall.

According to testimony, Tembe threw her engagement ring at Forbes during the argument, prompting the rapper to arrange for a separate room.

A Pepperclub Hotel employee also testified that Forbes had called the front desk requesting security because someone was on the balcony.

The inquest has been postponed to 19 October, when further witnesses are expected to testify.
