What the $200 electricity GST exemption means for Belizeans

By Zoila Palma:  Belizean households could see savings on their monthly electricity bills following Cabinet’s decision to double the GST exemption threshold for residential electricity consumption from $100 to $200, effective September 1, 2026.

Under the new measure, residential customers with electricity bills of $200 or less will have GST removed from the applicable electricity consumption, providing direct relief to household budgets.

For example, if a residential electricity bill is $200 before GST, the 12.5 percent GST would amount to $25. With the new exemption, that $25 would no longer be charged, meaning the customer would pay $200 instead of $225.

The change is expected to benefit more than 91,000 residential customers, representing approximately 96 percent of all residential electricity customers in Belize.

The previous $100 threshold had been in place since April 1, 2017, meaning the new measure significantly increases the portion of residential electricity consumption that can qualify for GST relief.

The measure is intended to provide immediate financial relief to families by reducing the tax burden associated with residential electricity costs.
