Zimbabwe beats Australia in second T20 World Cup match

Zimbabwe’s senior men’s cricket team continued their impressive run at the ongoing T20 World Cup with a commanding 23-run victory over Australia on Friday afternoon.

The win sees the Chevrons maintain their unbeaten start to the tournament, having opened their campaign with an eight-wicket triumph over Oman on Monday.

Following Friday’s result, Zimbabwe moved into second place in Group B with four points, level with log leaders Sri Lanka.

Under pressure to preserve their unbeaten record, Zimbabwe delivered a composed performance with the bat in the first innings, setting a competitive target of 170 runs from their allotted 20 overs.

The Chevrons posted 169 for 2, losing only Tadiwanashe Marumani and Ryan Burl, who both contributed 35 runs.

Opening batsman Brian Bennett anchored the innings superbly, carrying his bat through the innings with a well-compiled 64 off 56 balls.

Zimbabwe’s bowlers then produced another disciplined display, restricting Australia to 149 runs in 19.3 overs.

Man of the Match Blessing Muzarabani led the charge with an outstanding four-wicket haul, while Brad Evans chipped in with three wickets.

Australia’s top order collapsed early, with four batsmen dismissed within the first four overs, a setback from which they struggled to recover.

Middle-order batsman Matt Renshaw mounted resistance with a fighting 65 before being dismissed following a catch by Ryan Burl.

Zimbabwe will now turn their attention to their next Group B clash against Ireland on Tuesday, before facing hosts Sri Lanka on February 19.

The top two teams from each of the four groups will qualify for the Super 8 stage of the tournament.

Zimbabwe remain firmly in contention for a place in the Super 8 and could secure qualification with a win in at least one of their remaining two matches.

Group B Standings

1)Sri Lanka – 4 points

2)Zimbabwe – 4 points

3)Australia – 2 points

4)Ireland – 0 points

5)Oman – 0 points
