A 19-year-old driver’s need for speed came to an abrupt halt on Friday after the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department clocked his grey Audi tearing down the R21 freeway near Boksburg at a staggering 214km/h in a 100km/h zone.

Officers from the EMPD’s High-Speed Unit were conducting routine enforcement operations when they recorded the teenager’s excessive speed – apparently fast enough to qualify for take-off, if not for legal driving.

Arrested and charged

According to Yusuf Abramjee, the 19-year-old was promptly arrested and charged with speeding, with an alternative charge of reckless and negligent driving.

He was subsequently detained at Boksburg North Police Station and is expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court soon.

While luxury cars are often praised for performance, law enforcement was quick to remind motorists that public roads are not Formula One circuits – and arriving in court is rarely the destination drivers have in mind.
