The episode in focus is “The Homecoming Drama Nobody Saw Coming.” Here’s everything the hosts unpacked.

The hosts opened with big news. Netflix has renewed the series for a second season, making it the second-fastest renewal for a Black YA show on the platform, behind only Forever. They also praised Netflix’s growing slate of Black-centered titles, including Beauty in Black, Nemesis, and The Get Down.

Refund Check Season

The episode’s cold open takes place in the financial aid office during refund check season, a moment that will feel familiar to anyone who attended an HBCU. The scene quickly sets up each character. Hazel wants to tithe her check, Amir needs more money, Rashida can barely contain her excitement, and Debo tries to claim a check despite her wealthy parents.

Glennis drew a clear parallel to adult life: “It reminds me of, like, Black adults with tax time.” Seafood boils, fresh Nikes, and 40-inch boho braids all made the list.

Debo’s $14,000 Gamble

Trouble hit when the scheduled rapper pulled out of the Homecoming concert after his barber passed away. Debo stepped in and promised to book Summer Walker through her lash tech. She spent $14,000 on clothes and lashes, including $10,000 to the lash tech, Kayla. Her plan saved Friday Fest. However, Dwayne and Whitley cut her off and demanded repayment, echoing Whitley’s own past money battles with her father.

Legends Return With a Bombshell

Original favorites Jaleesa and Colonel Bradford Taylor made their return. The biggest shock came when Jaleesa admitted to a past affair with Walter Oakes, which left Whitley stunned. The hosts also applauded Colonel Taylor for telling Dwayne to get his prostate checked, an important health message for Black men.

Dwayne and Whitley on the Couch

In couples’ therapy with Dr. Henry, the strain in the Wayne marriage came into full view. The hosts noted Whitley’s focus on image and her memorable line: “You know how hard it is to be married to a saint, Dr. Henry.”Join the Conversation

Amir Gets Real Representation

A scene in Garvey Hall, where Amir cuts hair and meets basketball player Jalen, quietly establishes him as a queer character. The hosts praised the show for presenting Amir as professional, talented, and layered, not a “stereotypical gay bestie.”

Black Fathers, Real Feelings

Ron and his son Shaquille, who are still grieving the death of Shaquille’s mother two years ago. Ron encourages his son to open up and show emotion. Glennis summed up why that matters: “Black dad letting their sons have emotions again, the bar’s in hell, as far as media go.”
