An inspiring story
People are 22 times more likely to remember facts when they are delivered through a story. But what does a story need to truly move someone and inspire action? The post An inspiring story appeared first on Elite Business Magazine.
In March at the annual Elite Business Live conference, the speaker lineup was impressive. One speaker, however, stood out in an unexpected way. Fatima Whitbread MBE took to the stage and shared her journey, from being an abandoned baby, to growing up in the care system, to becoming part of the Whitbread family, and ultimately breaking world records as an athlete. It was deeply inspiring.
What struck me most was her complete lack of bitterness or resentment. She may have chosen to leave that part out, focusing instead on the positives. She spoke about the wonderful ward at the care home, known as Auntie Ray, someone she would have loved to have as her mum. It was an incredibly touching account. Raw insight into a life of adversity, yet filled with positivity. I have to admit, I shed a tear, and I am sure I was not alone. The emotion, the narrative and her presence have stayed with me ever since.
Reflection
I have reflected on her story over the past month. It is a powerful example of resilience and determination, but it also highlights the importance of the people around us. A few key individuals supported her on her journey to success.
Her athletic achievements were not just a result of talent. Adversity became a source of drive rather than defeat. Sport gave her structure, belonging and a way to turn pain into purpose. Strong coaching from Margaret Whitbread played a crucial role, alongside the stability and care of the Whitbread family environment that everyone deserves.
She became great because adversity shaped her character, support created opportunity, and sport gave her a platform to channel both into world-class performance.
The power of storytelling
As Fatima shared her story, we felt part of it. Her descriptions of the homes, her emotions, the conversations and the people were vivid and real. She brought the audience with her on the journey.
By the time she spoke about how we could support her cause, many of us were already emotionally invested.
What makes storytelling effective?
One of my favourite TEDx talks is by David J. Phillips, titled “The Magic of Storytelling.” He explains how storytelling can trigger emotional responses that engage an audience.
Reflecting on this, Fatima naturally did exactly that. She connected with the audience through openness and honesty. She invited us into her world and engaged the parent, the child and the human in all of us. Most people in the room could relate to at least one aspect of her story.
Her message was clear and powerful. The system is broken. Children in care are still being let down.
From emotion to action
Despite the impact of her story, I have found myself wondering how many people have taken action to support her UK campaign since the conference. I only got around to it recently myself.
The queue to speak to her after the talk was long. As a parent, I hope that at least a handful of people have taken meaningful action. It is easy in our busy lives to assume someone else will step in. Someone with more time, more money or more experience.
That someone is us.
If the story stayed with you, then it should lead to action. Real change happens when many individuals contribute in small ways. Together, we can help improve the system and create a better future for children in care.
What is your story?
How can you use your story to make a difference?
Whether it is for marketing, to inspire, to inform or simply to share insight, stories are one of the most powerful tools we have. We all learn from each other’s experiences.
My advice, while still learning myself, is simple. Keep it real. Keep it concise. Be clear on your purpose. Most importantly, make it relatable.
Ask yourself what will resonate with your audience and what you want them to do as a result. Every story should lead somewhere. That is where the impact lies.
