Forever is a long time. The longest possible time, even. Such a concept makes for an eyebrow-raising name for Bricknasty’s latest EP, forever, given it was written in just a few weeks.
It’s the Irish four-piece’s headiest record yet. Since emerging as the next up band from Dublin’s fertile music scene a few years ago, the band have built a following for stitching together influences from pop, hip hop, folk, R&B, jazz and much more, while splashing their music with plentiful levels of experimentation and weirdness. forever strips back their sound to its subtlest, but below the acoustic twangs and washed out vocals, is that same boundary rejecting formula that defines all of Bricknasty’s output.
The music video from the record’s most recent single, ‘the dom perignons’, is a perfect encapsulation of their singularity. It sees the funked-out R&B groove of the song melt away around two-thirds of the way through, giving away to the EP’s opening titular track. All the way through, it’s overlaid with disquieting psychedelic 3D animated visuals.
In a music world where it can often feel like everything’s been done under the sun, Bricknasty stand as a rare one-of-one act. To find out more about what inspires them, we invited the band to take part in Analogue Appreciation, our series celebrating physical culture in an ever more digital world.
