Are schools closed next week? Department clears up public holiday confusion

The Department of Basic Education has shot down reports claiming schools will be closed next week due to two public holidays.

The rumours have circulated on social media.

DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION SHUTS DOWN FAKE NEWS ABOUT SCHOOL CLOSURE

On Facebook, numerous posts state that schools will close from 27 April to 1 May due to two public holidays.

The first – 27 April or Freedom Day – falls on a Monday, and the second, 1 May or Workers’ Day, takes place on a Friday. As such, there are only three working days – 28 to 30 April.

A screenshot of a school circular suggesting that schools will close for the entire week has gone viral.

The Department of Basic Education has labelled the claims “fake news”.

It shared online: “Public Service Announcement: NO SPECIAL SCHOOL HOLIDAY ON 28-30 APRIL 2026…

“According to the official 2026 Calendar for Public Schools, 28, 29, and 30 April are normal school days. Learners in public schools are expected to be at their respective schools as planned”.

It added: “Don’t fall victim to fake news!”

In another post, the department added that the spread of misinformation undermines effective planning and may negatively affect attendance and learning outcomes.

The public is encouraged to contact the department or school for accurate and verified information regarding school terms, holidays, and important dates”.
