On Saturday night, the Braves lost 3-2, despite getting eight innings without a walk from Bryce Elder. On Sunday, right-hander Grant Holmes (4.35 ERA, 34 strikeouts in 41.1 innings) was on the mound and looking to pick up a third win in his ninth start of the season. He accomplished that feat by mixing his pitches well and not walking Red Sox hitters. Before the 33-minute rain delay, which took place in the middle of the sixth inning, Holmes had only walked one Red Sox hitter without giving up a run.
Reynaldo Lopez came on in relief for Holmes (6 innings, 4 strikeouts, No earned runs) t0 start the 7th inning.
Austin Riley hit his seventh home run of the season in the first inning. The three-run home run off of Red Sox starter Brayan Bello came with Ozzie Albies and Michael Harris II on base. With the base hit, Albies put to rest a 24-at-bat hitless streak.
With the bases loaded in the second inning, Drake Baldwin walked to make the score 4-0. Olson came up a few batters later with bases loaded and grounded out to first base, allowing another run to score and making it 5-0. A solo home run from Mike Yastrzemski to start the fourth inning made the score 6-0. A Dom Smith single drove Riley in during the fifth inning and the Braves were ahead 7-0.
Up Next: Atlanta is headed to South Florida to play four games in four days against an improved Miami Marlins team.
This will be the second series against the Marlins. The Braves took two of three games in Miami in April. Atlanta lost the series opener 10-4, before winning the next two games 6-5 and 6-3 on Jackie Robinson Day.
Ronald Acuna, Jr. has missed both series against the Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox, but should be back in the lineup for the Marlins series. Against the Marlins this season, Acuna, Jr. hasn’t exactly been lighting things up. Batting leadoff in all three games, he was 3-11 with four strikeouts and no RBI. The Braves did manage to score 16 runs, and Acuna, Jr. was 2-4 in the third and series-deciding game. Having him back in the lineup has to always be considered a plus for the Braves, who still have the best overall record in Major League Baseball.
