Bail bid for eight accused of insurance-related killings postponed
The bail application of eight accused of insurance-related killings has been adjourned to Friday.
The bail application of eight accused in the insurance-related killings has been adjourned to Friday in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.
The hearing has been adjourned to allow the defence lawyers and the state to prepare for closing arguments.
The defence lawyers have also concluded the cross-examination of the investigating officer, Captain Keshi Mabunda, who is opposing bail.
The accused allegedly insured unsuspecting victims and later killed them to claim insurance payouts of about R10 million.
The accused were allegedly part of a syndicate led by former police sergeant Rachel Kutumela.
Magistrate Mpho Hadebe said both the defence lawyers and the state will present their final arguments.
“ As the respondents have colluded their opposing evidence, I am postponing the matter to tomorrow and give your legal representatives a chance to advance arguments why you should be released on bail and also give the state a chance to address the court as to why this court should not give you bail. You are therefore remanded in custody until tomorrow, 08h30 in the morning, and with accused number four, his application is still on the roll.”
