IEC in Limpopo launches campaign to lure the youth to vote

The Electoral Commission (IEC) in Limpopo has launched a campaign to lure the youth to vote in the upcoming local government elections in November.

The commission has launched the 2026 local government elections campaign in Polokwane.

It also says that over 3 000 voting stations will be opened during the voter registration weekend on the 20th and 21st of June.

The provincial electoral commissioner, Nkaro Mateta, says youth participation during elections is still a concern.

“Well, we are ready as it were today; we are launching our communication campaign formally. We have invited political parties. We have invited serious stakeholders here in the province. And we are going to share our preparedness and our readiness, and we are also going to reveal and perhaps explain what the logo that we are using this year, get up, show up, and vote, is targeted at young people. Research from HSRC shows that young people are just not on our voters’ roll,” says Mateta.

Mateta says they’re making efforts to curb conflicts amongst political parties during the campaign rallies.

“The beauty of our system is that we also have a structure called a political liaison committee. Just yesterday, we had a meeting in which we also introduced a conflict program. We have appointed a conflict coordinator, Advocate Sonti, to coordinate and ensure that political parties have tolerance among the contestants because the main issue is about tolerance and that is important for us.”
