Belize hosts Central American Commission for Environment and Development Technical meeting ahead of Regional Environment Ministers’ session

By Zoila Palma:  Belize hosted the first technical meeting of the Central American Commission for Environment and Development (CCAD) under its Pro Tempore Presidency on August 11, 2026, as regional countries prepare for the upcoming Council of Ministers meeting. The meeting was held at the Best Western Biltmore Plaza and brought together CCAD Liaison Officers and representatives from across the region.

The meeting was chaired by Carlos Moreno of the National Biodiversity Office within the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management.

Representatives from Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Panama and the Dominican Republic participated in person, while Costa Rica joined virtually.

Discussions focused on preparations for the LXXV CCAD Council of Ministers Meeting scheduled for August 13.

Among the key items addressed were the agenda for the Ministers’ meeting and the Dominican Republic’s CCAD Pro Tempore Presidency Report covering January to June 2026. Participants also reviewed Belize’s priorities for its Presidency for the July to December 2026 period.

The Liaison Officers further reviewed and accepted the revised 2026-2035 CCAD Regional Environmental Strategy Framework, which is expected to guide regional environmental action over the next decade. They also reviewed and accepted the CCAD Communication Strategy and branding for the Forests of Central America and the Dominican Republic, which will be submitted to Ministers for consideration and approval.

The meeting highlights the importance of regional cooperation in addressing environmental challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, forest protection, water security, pollution and disaster risks.

As Belize leads the CCAD Presidency during the second half of 2026, the Ministry said it remains committed to advancing Belize’s priorities, strengthening regional partnerships and contributing to solutions that benefit both communities and the environment.
