SAN NICOLÁS DE LOS GARZA, MX – In the first-ever Leagues Cup match at El Volcán, Vancouver Whitecaps FC pushed Tigres to the limit in a tight 1-1 draw, before the home side survived a 5-4 penalty shootout.

Substitute Emmanuel Sabbi almost snapped the crossbar in two with an absolute scorcher to give the Blue and White their first ever point in three matches at the stadium.

With their Leagues Cup play concluded, the ‘Caps now turn their attention back to MLS play with three matches in quick succession. First up is a chance to clinch a record ninth Cascadia Cup in Seattle this Sunday at 7:30 p.m. PT. Tuesday’s match was the sixth all-time meeting between the ‘Caps and Tigres. Less than a minute in, the tone was set for a gritty evening. Jeevan Badwal sprinted after a loose ball just outside the top of the box – but he received a heavy clattering from Tigres centre back Joaquim Henrique, who was booked.

Whitecaps FC were on the front foot for the majority of the first half. However, the home side drew first blood in the 19th minute. Tigres striker Rodrigo Aguirre took a through ball and tucked it into the far corner for 1-0.

Near the half-hour, Whitecaps FC was a Scottish boot away from an equalizer.

After Rayan Elloumi won the ball high up field, the striker spotted oncoming captain Ryan Gauld. A moment later, the Scot slid in to crack a 20-yard knuckler off his left boot to force a sprawling parry from Tigres ’keeper Nahuel Guzmán.

Whitecaps FC again had hopes dashed when centre back Mathías Laborda’s tap-in dribbler off a corner kick was disallowed for offside.

Deep in first-half added time, Boehmer impressively kicked out to deny a dangerous Juan Brunetta drive.

After play restarted, Boehmer rang the bell as he won rounds two and three versus Brunetta. The ’keeper provided a point-blank denial, plus a punch aside from a free kick.

A Gauld short corner kick led Whitecaps FC to light up the scoreboard in their favour. Substitute Mihail Gherasimencov flashed a diagonal cross to the back post for another sub, Emmanuel Sabbi, who flexed his muscles for a 10-yard hammer blow that bent in off the crossbar past Guzmán. It was 1-1 with 10 minutes left in regulation.

The match continued to ramp up in intensity as Tigres were desperate to get a result that could see them advance, while the ‘Caps were ready to play spoiler. In the span of four minutes, referee Iván Barton sent off two Tigres players: forward Diego Lainez for dissent, along with goalkeeper Guzmán for a bizarre push on Barton.

With regulation time complete, the two teams headed to kicks from the spot, Boehmer made two huge saves, sliding to punch away both an Aguirre attempt and one from Jesús Garza.

In the end, Tigres captured the extra point, their third shootout win of the tournament.
