Côte d’Ivoire’s newest cultural export may arrive at double speed.
Biama, the frenetic offshoot of coupé-décalé growing out of Yopougon’s streets, has turned dance battles into laboratories of acrobatics, comedy, bravado, and viral choreography.
TikTok is its accelerant, but the movement belongs to a longer Ivorian tradition in which music invents bodies as quickly as bodies invent music.
Critics may dismiss it as street noise; young dancers are treating it as vocabulary. In that sense, biama is doing what youth cultures always do: converting impatience into form. The question is not whether it lasts unchanged, but what it mutates into next.
