Chigozie Obioma’s move from Booker-shortlisted novelist to film producer has produced a box office hit.
‘Call of My Life’, his first producing credit, has surprisingly grossed ₦837 million at the Nigerian box office, becoming the country’s highest-grossing film of 2026 so far, pushing towards the symbolic ₦1 billion mark.
More interesting than the number is the bridge it represents. Nigerian literature and Nollywood have long occupied neighbouring compounds, separated by an imposing brick wall, but Obioma’s success suggests that serious literary instincts and mass entertainment need not glare at each other across the fence.
Sometimes the adaptation begins at the level of literary creation.
