*More than five decades after its original release, Bill Withers’ timeless hit “Ain’t No Sunshine” is experiencing a major streaming revival.

Spotify recently revealed new listener data as part of its 20th anniversary celebration, highlighting songs that found renewed popularity years — and in some cases decades — after first debuting. Among the platform’s biggest comeback stories was “Ain’t No Sunshine,” which reached its highest streaming levels in 2024, 53 years after the song first arrived in 1971, according to PARADE.

The soulful track ranked as the second-biggest resurgence song in Spotify history, trailing only Creedence Clearwater Revival’s “Fortunate Son,” which also hit a streaming peak in 2024 despite originally being released in 1969.

“Ain’t No Sunshine” first appeared on Withers’ debut album “Just As I Am” and quickly became one of the defining songs of the early 1970s. During its original chart run, the single climbed to No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached No. 6 on the Hot R&B Songs chart.

The song’s modern resurgence may have been boosted by renewed attention last year after it was selected for the Library of Congress’ National Recording Registry. The honor recognizes recordings considered culturally, historically, or artistically significant.

Spotify’s anniversary data also spotlighted several other older songs that found new audiences years later. Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now,” Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” and Goo Goo Dolls’ “Iris” were all included among the platform’s largest comeback tracks.

The renewed momentum around “Ain’t No Sunshine” highlights how classic songs continue reaching new generations of listeners long after their original chart runs ended.
