Blind Welfare Association Urges Saint Lucians to Move Beyond Sympathy and Take Action

The St. Lucia Blind Welfare Association (SLBWA) is calling on Saint Lucians to move beyond sympathy and take meaningful action toward building a more inclusive society for persons living with blindness and visual impairment. This comes as it observes Blindness Awareness Month 2026 under the theme: “From Awareness to Action: Empowering Inclusion and Expanding Opportunity.”

The month-long observance aims to spotlight the daily challenges faced by visually impaired individuals while encouraging greater access to education, employment, accessibility, and community participation. Organizers say the initiative is designed not only to raise awareness, but to inspire real change across every sector of society.

As part of the campaign, the Association will roll out a series of public engagement activities targeting students, employers, service providers, and community stakeholders. Planned initiatives include school-based Braille reading sessions, eye screening programmes, accessibility discussions, employer workshops, and empowerment activities for students living with visual impairments.

The observance will also focus heavily on the role of assistive technology, personal safety, independence, and stronger community support systems in improving the quality of life for persons who are blind or visually impaired.

President of the Association, Glen Simon, stressed that the campaign is also a call for greater attention to eye health and early detection, warning that many cases of vision loss can be prevented with timely intervention.

“Though this month the call is made louder for increased awareness and inclusion for people living with blindness and low vision, we are also advocating for the prevention of blindness and the preservation of sight. Get your vision tested today to know your eye health status. The SLBWA is here to serve you,” Simon stated.

The Association is urging businesses, schools, organisations, families, and individuals to help remove barriers that continue to limit opportunities for visually impaired persons, while fostering environments rooted in dignity, accessibility, respect, and inclusion.
