The government of Botswana has declared 15 May an unpaid public holiday in honour of former president Festus Mogae, who died last Friday.
The announcement was made by the Botswana presidency in a notice issued on Tuesday.
The decision follows a government gazette published on 8 May following Mogae’s death.
“This is in line with President Duma Boko’s powers under Section 3 of the Public Holidays Act. The public is advised that this is an unpaid holiday,” the notice reads.
The day has been set aside to allow citizens to pay their respects to the former head of state.
The public has also been encouraged to continue observing the mourning period with dignity and solemnity.
Mogae served as Botswana’s third president, from 1998 to 2008.
