Breaking News: Two Lambeth Green Party candidates arrested over alleged anti-Semitic posts

Saiqa Ali, the Green candidate for Streatham St Leonard’s, and Sabine Mairey (pictured), the Green candidate for Clapham Town, were arrested by Metropolitan Police officers on Thursday morning, the Daily Telegraph has reported.

According to the report, both candidates were detained on suspicion of stirring up racial hatred under Section 19 of the Public Order Act 1986 and taken into custody for questioning.

Brixton Buzz has not independently verified the arrests with the Met, which has been approached for comment.

The arrests follow disclosures by The Spectator earlier this month of social media posts shared by the two candidates.

Posts attributed to Ali included an image of an armed man in what appeared to be a Hamas headband captioned “Long live the Resistance”; an image of the Earth wrapped by a serpent bearing the Star of David; a claim that the UK government is “over-represented with Zionists Jews”; and a post asserting that Donald Trump is “owned by Jews”.

Other posts described 9/11 as a “false-flag attack”.

Posts attributed to Mairey included a video about a vehicle and shooting attack on a synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, captioned “Ramming a synagogue isn’t anti-Semitism. It’s revenge”, and a post comparing modern Israel unfavourably to Nazi Germany alongside an image of Auschwitz.

Ali apologised earlier this month, saying she “unequivocally rejects anti-Semitism in all its forms” and that her comments were “rooted in concern for the humanitarian situation in the Middle East”.

A Green Party spokesperson told the Telegraph: “This is now a police matter. We are unable to comment at this stage.”

Lambeth Council has been under Labour control for 20 years. The Greens currently hold three seats in Streatham St Leonard’s and are contesting wards across the borough at the local elections on 7 May.
