The legendary R&B singer has filed a defamation lawsuit targeting multiple parties, including his ex-wife, one of his sons, two prominent bloggers, and the New York Post, alleging they worked together to spread damaging falsehoods about his character and his role as a father, TMZ reports.

Central to the suit are allegations that McKnight turned his back on his children and withheld a final expression of love from Niko as he lay dying from cancer. McKnight called the narrative “shockingly dishonest” and characterized the broader effort as “malicious character assassination.”

The suit alleges that Brian McKnight Jr., bloggers Marc Lamont Hill and Tasha K, and the New York Post each played a role in spreading the story further. McKnight further claims Tasha K went online and falsely accused him of having sex with a minor. He is seeking damages, arguing the campaign has inflicted serious harm on his reputation, career, and family.

A second legal filing  takes aim at North Carolina radio station Foxy 107.1, its parent company Urban One, and host Karen Clark over a January 2025 broadcast that featured Julie McKnight. During the segment, Julie described McKnight as emotionally and mentally abusive, accused him of being an absent father, and claimed the family was displaced from their home while the children were very young. McKnight argues Clark’s handling of the interview steered listeners toward viewing him as an abusive and unfit father rather than allowing the conversation to unfold fairly.

The same lawsuit also targets Urban One’s nationally syndicated Rickey Smiley Morning Show over a December 2025 podcast episode that aired a clip of Brian McKnight Jr. repeating the claim that his father withheld those final words from Niko. McKnight contends the clip was stripped of any surrounding context, giving him no avenue to address the claims being made against him.

McKnight has been estranged from his older children for years, with the kids publicly alleging abandonment — claims he has consistently and firmly rejected.
