Cape Town hands over homes to beneficiaries in Gugulethu

The City of Cape Town has handed over 18 more homes to qualifying beneficiaries of the Gugulethu Infill housing project.

Most recently, the City’s Human Settlement Directorate bestowed the keys to these Breaking New Ground (BNG) homes – located in the Gugulethu section of the project – to the new homeowners and their families.

GUGULETHU HOMES: A ‘NEW BEGINNING’

Carl Pophaim, Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, said of the occasion:

This marks a new beginning for the beneficiaries – one that is filled with joy, pride and hope for the future. Our Human Settlements teams remain dedicated, working tirelessly to deliver homes not only in Gugulethu, but [also] across communities throughout the metro.

Pophaim says that the goal of the Gugulethu Infill housing project is to deliver 1 004 homes to qualifying beneficiaries and their families:

This is made up of 570 units at the Gugulethu Erf 8448 site and 434 at Mau Mau in Nyanga.

OVERCOMING ROUGH START

Getting the Gugulethu Infill housing project off the ground has been a difficult journey, one marred by various obstacles.

These include contractor issues, coronavirus-related delays, extortion attempts, unlawful occupation of partially completed units at Mau Mau and vandalism.

Despite these challenges, the City expects further handovers in the near future.

CHOOSING BENEFICIARIES

The City selects beneficiaries in accordance with the Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register.

Housing opportunities include City-owned rental accommodation; social housing (rental); affordable housing; and, like the project in Gugulethu, state-subsidised BNG houses.

To register, you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be over the age of 18.
  • Be legally competent to enter into a contract.
  • Be married, co-habiting or have dependents (this does not apply to applicants over the age of 60 or those with disabilities).
  • Have a combined household income of less than R3 500 per month to qualify for BNG housing.
  • Never have owned a property.
  • Never have benefitted from a government housing subsidy before.

You can register online at your nearest City housing office.

Be aware that qualifying beneficiaries are not charged to register on the Housing Needs Register or to receive a housing allocation. As such, you need to be vigilant if you are asked to make a payment for placements or related services.
