Contractor pleads guilty to assault and use of threatening language

Michael Alphonsa Harris pleaded guilty to using threatening language and assaulting Senator Lisa Cummins on September 5 when he appeared in court today.

He will spend the night in custody to allow Magistrate Jared Richards time to research the penalties associated with the charges, but both he and his attorney Richard Ellis have begged the court for leniency.

The court heard that Harris, 56, of Seales Ave, Goodland, St Michael, was shopping in Terrific Tiles to complete work on the Springer Memorial School in time for the reopening of school today when he saw Cummins.

The contractor said he approached her because he sent several letters that went unanswered and said ‘God ain’t sleeping’.

But in her statement, Cummins, the Minister of Health and Wellness said she was shopping with her mother when the accused said ‘Is people like you that thing does happen to’, in an aggressive manner.

Cummins said she feared for her life and said ‘excuse me’ in response. She said Harris put his hands in her face and repeated the statement and she stepped back to avoid him hitting her.

Meanwhile, Richards said Barbados was one of those places where officials could walk around freely and he wanted it to remain so. (SAT)
