ONTARIO’S LaSalle Police Service is investigating the fatal stabbing of Nancy Grewal, 45, of Windsor.
Shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, emergency services responded to the 2400-block of Todd Lane for a report of a stabbing. A 45-year-old female was located with injuries. She was transported by Essex-Windsor Emergency Medical Services to the hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.
(LaSalle is a bedroom community of the City of Windsor, part of the Windsor Census Metropolitan Area, and is located south of that city.)
On Wednesday, LaSalle Police identified the victim as Grewal. It said: “To ease public concern, we are sharing that investigators are viewing this as an isolated incident.”
On Thursday, police said that they had received media inquiries about narratives on social media and possible motives of the homicide.
Media in India has been highlighting her case, speculating if her death was the result of her being outspoken. The Tribune newspaper said: “Grewal had gained attention online for her commentary on the India–Canada diplomatic tensions and criticisms of Khalistani supporters.”
It said: “Her Facebook also indicated she originally belonged to Ludhiana and was living in Calgary, Alberta before relocating to the Windsor / LaSalle region.”
LaSalle Police Chief Michael Pearce said in a statement: “Investigators are confident this was not a random act of violence. Ms. Grewal’s murder is being investigated as an intentional act against her. All information is being considered. While we recognize the significant public interest in this case, we will not share information that will compromise the investigation, including leads, tips, and investigative avenues.”
CTV News reported that the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) identified Grewal as a personal support worker (PSW), saying she was working alone on Tuesday night when she was stabbed. The union couldn’t confirm if she was attending to a client at their home at the time.
