On April 20, 2026, Cynthia Shange, the first black South African woman to represent the country in the Miss World beauty pageant, died in a hospital after a short illness. Her daughter, Nohle Thema, announced her death on Instagram, asking for privacy and prayers for her family.
“With a heavy heart, I share the news of our Dear Mother. Please keep my family in your prayers during this difficult time.”
She remembered her as a graceful and compassionate soul who was warm and kind to others.
“A graceful and compassionate soul whose presence brought warmth, dignity, and kindness to all those who knew her,” it read, adding: “We honour her journey, her strength, and the love she shared so generously.”
The South African Ministry of Sport, Arts, and Culture described her as a pioneer.
“Cynthia Shange was a barrier-breaker for black people and for women at a time when both were systematically excluded from global platforms. She stood where many were told they did not belong, and in doing so, redefined what was possible for generations to come. Her legacy is one of courage, dignity and unapologetic excellence.”
Who was Cynthia Shange?
Cynthia Philisiwe Shange was born on July 27, 1949, in Lamontville, Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. In the 1970s, she rose to prominence and two years later, won the Miss Natal title.
This was a big breakthrough because, at the time, black South African women weren’t allowed to compete in Miss South Africa because of the country’s racist system. Shange became the first South African woman to represent South Africa at the Miss World 1972 pageant, finishing in fifth position.
Consequently, Shange gained acting opportunities and was cast in notable roles in Udlaliwe, Shaka Zulu, and Muvhango.
In 2024, she was awarded Life Time Achiever at the KZN Simon Mabhunu Sabela Awards for her contribution to acting.
