Da Project stun Stingers, Flyers soar above Ottos in D1 basketball playoffs

Da Project stunned Elite Stingerz while defending champions Flyers made light work of Ottos to take one-nil leads in their respective Division 1 basketball playoffs semifinals when action in the Antigua and Barbuda Basketball Association (ABBA) competition got on the way on Thursday.

Contesting game one of the best of three series, Da Project edged championship hopefuls Stingerz by one point, winning 85-84 at the JSC basketball complex. Da Project outscored Stingerz in three of the four quarters contested, winning the first three periods with scores of 20-13, 24-23 and 27-21 before Stingerz rebounded to claim the final quarter 27-14 but fell just one point shy of the mark.

Da Project was led by Malik Moore who sank 25 points on 10 of 18 shooting with Cornell Greenaway adding 21 points and five rebounds. Terry Dawkins contributed with 19 points and seven rebounds with T-Shawn Lewis adding 12 points and 12 rebounds to the winning cause.

For Stingerz, Keroi Lee top-scored with 21 points while grabbing 20 rebounds. Joshua Minner and Alexis Jackson picked up 17 and 12 points respectively. Jackson also bagged 13 rebounds while Minner picked up eight.

Meanwhile, defending champions Flyers easily beat Ottos 81-57 when they met in the feature clash. Flyers dropped only one of the four quarters against Ottos after they were outscored 28-20 in the second quarter. They however won the opening quarter 23-9, claiming the third 16-13 and the fourth 22-7.

Kevin Cox led the scoring for Flyers with 16 points and 12 rebounds while Adonis Humphreys added 14 points and 18 rebounds. There was 12 points for Xavier Meade while Daniel Perez hit 10 points.

For Ottos, Christian Walker sank a game high of 19 points while grabbing 14 rebounds. He had help from Nick Strawter with 11 points and six rebounds while Danny Perez hit nine points and picked up 11 rebounds.
