DEFENCE Minister, Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, on Friday joined inmates at Harare Central Prison for a Good Friday church service, urging hope, dignity and rehabilitation.

The visit, held in line with Easter values of renewal and forgiveness, saw the minister interact with inmates and correctional officers, encouraging offenders to embrace transformation and a better future beyond incarceration.

She said imprisonment should be a time for reflection and personal reform, adding that offenders remain part of society despite their circumstances.

“Today I come to worship with you on Good Friday to show you that as government and leaders, we can not lead without the spirit of discernment as we work tirelessly for your good welfare whilst you are being rehabilitated,” she said.

As a gesture of goodwill, Muchinguri donated foodstuffs and toiletries and pledged continued government support to improve inmates’ welfare.

Father Makava, of the Roman Catholic Church’s Chishawasha Parish, urged inmates to endure imprisonment, drawing parallels with Christ’s suffering, and called for repentance and renewal during Easter.

Inmates expressed gratitude, saying the visit had given them hope.
