THE Falun Dafa Association of Canada is calling for the removal of Chinese consulate officials in Vancouver after Global News reported that representatives from the Chinese consulate met with civil servants at Vancouver’s Civic Theatre regarding Shen Yun Performing Arts.
“There was never a doubt in our minds that theatres in Canada were being pressured by the Chinese Communist Party to cancel Shen Yun,” said Joel Chipkar, spokesperson for the Falun Dafa Association of Canada. “Now we have a smoking gun.”
Shen Yun was scheduled to perform at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre from April 8-12. Despite receiving bomb threats from the same sender who shut down six performances at Toronto’s Four Seasons Centre in March, the Vancouver venue proceeded with all shows safely. The Vancouver Police Cybercrime Unit confirmed the sender’s email is linked to a phone number based in China.
” We applaud Vancouver’s Civic Theatre for refusing to be intimidated by bomb threats and ensuring all six performances proceeded safely,” said Chipkar. “We also note the Theatre did not yield to foreign pressure described in the Global News report.”
He said the consulate’s actions are consistent with a documented global campaign by the Chinese Communist Party to silence Shen Yun through diplomatic pressure on venues and governments. Chinese embassy officials have been caught pressuring theatres in Madrid, Seoul, and other cities to cancel Shen Yun performances.
In Canada, the campaign has included over 20 hoax threats in the past two years — bomb threats, death threats, and threats against performers’ families — all aimed at cancelling Shen Yun and silencing the Falun Gong community. Globally, there have been over 150 such threats. All have proven to be hoaxes.
Shen Yun showcases the China that existed before communism and exposes the human rights abuses against Falun Gong that the Communist Party has spent decades hiding. Many of its performers fled persecution in China.
“Our freedom in Canada ends when we allow the CCP to silence our voices,” said Chipkar.
The Falun Dafa Association of Canada calls on the Canadian government to:
- Publicly condemn the CCP’s transnational repression against Shen Yun and Falun Gong in Canada.
- Declare the Chinese consulate officials responsible persona non grata and remove them from Canada.
