Egypt and Mali Deepen Digital Cooperation on Fibre Networks and AI

Egypt and Mali have discussed strengthening cooperation in digital transformation, information technology and digital skills development following a meeting between the countries’ communications ministers on September 27, 2026.

The meeting brought together Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology and Mali’s Minister of Communications, Digital Economy and Information Technology, Hamdo Aguilian, alongside senior officials from both countries.

Discussions focused on opportunities for cooperation in digital infrastructure, including fibre-optic and mobile networks. Mali expressed interest in benefiting from Egypt’s experience in developing fibre-optic infrastructure and expanding high-speed connectivity.

Egypt highlighted its communications infrastructure work under the Hayat Karima initiative, including the deployment of high-speed fibre-optic services intended to reach 60 million citizens. The two sides discussed exchanging experiences, implementation plans and technical expertise in this area.

Digital capacity building was also identified as an area for cooperation. Egypt pointed to training programmes offered through the African Center for Training in Communication and Information Technologies (EG-ATRC), which provides training opportunities for African professionals.

The meeting also explored cooperation in artificial intelligence, particularly the development of AI applications for government services. Egypt presented its national strategic direction for AI and the work of its Applied Innovation Center in developing technological solutions aimed at addressing societal challenges and supporting development.

Mali also expressed interest in Egypt’s experience in developing digital platforms and citizen-focused digital services. Discussions included using digital infrastructure and government platforms to modernise public administration and expand digital government services.

The two countries are expected to explore further technical meetings to identify specific areas for cooperation, including digital infrastructure development, AI, digital platforms, knowledge exchange and capacity building.

Senior officials from Mali’s communications and technology agencies and Egypt’s National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority and Ministry of Communications and Information Technology participated in the meeting.
