Emtee Explains Why He Gets Paranoid When Fans Rush the Stage. Emtee has opened up about the fear and mistrust he experiences when fans rush the stage, revealing that his past has made him particularly cautious during live performances.

The “Roll Up” hitmaker addressed the issue on social media after an incident at his recent performance in Thohoyandou, where a fan attempted to get onto the stage while he was performing. Emtee explained that although he appreciates the support from his fans, unexpected movements toward him can trigger a sense of paranoia.
“I love my supporters but I get paranoid when they jump on stage ndisaphangela. I’m an ex-con. I don’t trust anyone,” he wrote.
Emtee’s reference to being “scared” highlighted the personal reasons behind his reaction. The comment came shortly after the rapper spent 16 days at the Johannesburg Correctional Centre in September 2026 following an alleged breach of a protection order involving his estranged wife, Nicole Chinsamy. He was later released on R2,000 bail after the case was withdrawn.
The Thohoyandou incident reportedly happened around September 28 during a Gastronomy event that drew a large crowd. Footage circulating online showed Emtee responding firmly as the fan moved toward the stage.
Some social media users compared the moment to what has been described online as “pulling a Scott Maphuma,” referring to a more assertive approach to managing interactions with fans on stage. Despite the moment, Emtee’s performance itself was well received, with the crowd singing along to his songs and reportedly asking for more after he left the stage.
The rapper has experienced similar situations before. During the 2022 Ivyson Tour, a fan attempted to pull him down while he was performing “We Up”, forcing Emtee to step back and protect himself.
For an artist whose career has often been shaped by personal experiences, the latest incident has opened another window into the challenges that come with performing in front of large crowds. Emtee has built a strong connection with his supporters through music that frequently draws from his own struggles, but his comments show that the relationship between performer and audience can also come with moments of uncertainty.
The rapper’s recent return to the stage has been closely followed by fans after his time in custody, including his appearance at the Cape Town Kota Festival before the Thohoyandou performance.
