TikTok has become an important part of how music is discovered, promoted and discussed. For emerging Black artists, the platform can provide a direct way to introduce music to potential listeners without depending entirely on traditional radio or major-label promotion.
A song can gain attention when users create videos around a specific sound, lyric, dance or trend. As more people use the audio, the song can reach audiences who may not have discovered the artist through traditional music platforms.
Doechii is one example of how social media can contribute to an artist’s growth. BET reported that her song “Anxiety,” which originally appeared on an earlier project, gained renewed attention through TikTok before becoming an official release and eventually earning major recognition.
TikTok has also changed how artists approach releasing music. Instead of simply dropping a song and waiting for listeners to find it, artists can preview songs, create short-form content and encourage fans to interact with specific moments of a track.
For Black artists, this can create another avenue for discovery and audience building. However, going viral does not automatically guarantee a lasting music career. Artists still need strong music, consistent promotion, performances and connections within the industry.
TikTok is therefore best understood as one part of a larger music strategy. It can help create awareness, but the artist still has to turn that attention into a sustainable career.
