Ghana Appoints New Coach with a Quarter-Final Target

Carlos Queiroz is the new head coach of the Ghanaian national team. He is expected to take charge of the Black Stars during the forthcoming FIFA World Cup. This comes weeks after Otto Addo was fired for poor performance.

Now, the Portuguese tactician is tasked with leading Ghana to the quarter-finals of the World Cup. However, the team has not reached this stage since the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, when former captain Asamoah Gyan missed a crucial penalty against Argentina.

If he is to achieve this, Quieroz will be given a two-year contract. Queiroz, who had been managing the Oman national team, said that this is not just a job, it’s a mission which he is going to give his full experience.

“Today, I accept this mission with the same passion and commitment that have guided me throughout my career. Ghana is a nation of talent, pride, and footballing soul. I arrive with respect for its history and belief in its future.

“Together, with unity, discipline, and ambition, we will work to honour the expectations of a great football nation. This is not just another job; it is a mission. And I am ready to give everything of my experience and knowledge once again, in the service of the game and the happiness of people,” he added.

Quieroz History in African Football

The Portuguese national has worked in African football before. He managed Egypt and led them to the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations final. In 2000, Querioz worked with Bafana Bafana and helped them to qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. However, he resigned from the job before the tournament after a disagreement with the South African Football Association.

He also applied for the Cameroon job in 2018, signalling a long-standing interest in African football that the GFA took note of when weighing up their options.
