By Zoila Palma: The National Meteorological Service of Belize has issued a nationwide heat alert as inland temperatures are expected to reach or exceed 97°F (36°C) this afternoon.
Residents are urged to take precautions against the extreme heat.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of water, limit outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, and seek shade or air-conditioned environments whenever possible to avoid heat-related illnesses.
The public is also encouraged to check regularly on elderly persons, young children, and individuals with underlying health conditions, as they are particularly vulnerable to the effects of extreme heat.
