Historic Day at SALCC as Administrative Block Takes Dame Pearlette Louisy’s Name

In a deeply significant ceremony combining national legacy with a major personal milestone, the administrative building of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (SALCC) has been officially renamed after Governor-General Emerita, Dame Pearlette Louisy. The event took place on Monday, June 8th. The date also coincides with Dame Pearlette’s 80th birthday which was celebrated with a cake, champagne and special musical renditions.

Dame Pearlette expressed that the renaming is more than a standard institutional honour as it marks a return to the very grounds where she spent decades shaping the minds of Saint Lucian youth. Speaking at the ceremony, she fondly recalled her deep-rooted history with the physical space.

“Let me just say I feel honoured having this particular building named after me,” Dame Pearlette said.

She noted that long before the institution was consolidated under the banner of SALCC, she spent a vast amount of time walking the corridors of that exact administrative block. In those early days, the Morne Fortune campus was split into three distinct entities: the Saint Lucia A-Level College, the Teachers’ College, and the Morne Technical College.

Dame Pearlette’s contribution to national development through education spans nearly the entirety of her professional life. She began her foundational impact as a teacher at St. Joseph’s Convent between 1969 and 1972, returning for another stint from 1975 to 1976. From 1976 to 1986, she served as a tutor of French, later rising to become the Principal of the Saint Lucia A-Level College. When the A-Level College and Morne Technical School merged to create SALCC, Dame Pearlette transitioned into leadership seamlessly, serving first as Dean, then as Vice Principal, and ultimately as the Principal of the college.

Her transition from academia to state leadership saw her serve as Saint Lucia’s first female Governor-General from 1997 to 2017, making her the longest-serving female Governor-General in the Commonwealth. Beyond her local impact, her academic and state achievements have been recognized globally with numerous prestigious distinctions. In 1999, she was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws by the University of Bristol, and in July of that same year, she was appointed Dame Grand Cross of the Order of St. Michael and St. George. Later, in 2011, her alma mater, the University of the West Indies, also conferred upon her an Honorary Doctor of Laws. The newly renamed SALCC administrative block stands as a permanent monument to an educator, diplomat, and institutional builder whose life’s work remains woven into the fabric of Saint Lucian society.
