How Mangombe’s gamble backfired in Harare derby

WHEN the Dynamos’ team sheet for the match against CAPS United was released hours before the encounter, confidence in the side upstaging their rivals dissipated.

Genesis Mangombe had made several changes, bringing in Harmony Nare to replace Tatenda Makoni, while industrious midfielder Tellmore Pio was also relegated to the bench.

The changes backfired in spectacular fashion, with Nare guilty of conceding the first goal. He failed to deal with Chawanangwa Kaonga’s cross, leaving Ishmael Wadi to score CAPS United’s opening goal.

The Harare derby was also Nare’s second match for Dynamos, and he has conceded seven goals in the two games, an unwanted record for a club of DeMbare’s stature.

The absence of Pio was also evident in midfield.

Mangombe struggled to explain why Makoni, who had been the trusted goalkeeper, was left on the bench.

“It was a tactical decision. When we field the first 11, we consider the opponents we are playing, and we also use what we see at training. You also look at Nare – he also did some great saves,” said Mangombe.

He added that there is a rotational system at Dynamos in the goalkeeping department.

“In our system, if you concede two goals, maybe we are bound to change the goalkeeper,” said Mangombe.

Mangombe’s selection definitely defined the outcome of the Harare derby, considering the lack of quality depth in his side.

If there was any doubt about the work Mangombe has on his hands, it was laid bare in the Harare derby.

DeMbare are bereft of quality and game-changing players, something, to his credit, CAPS United coach Takesure Chiragwi has in his side.

Despite having a slender lead, Chiragwi never took his foot off the gas and kept his attacking threat.

Chiragwi said his side exploited Dynamos’ weakness and was rewarded with a derby victory.

“This is how we play. This is how we train. For you to defend, you need to defend by attacking. Their key players were defenders, and we were hitting the long balls. So we made substitutions in attack so that we add speed,” said Chiragwi.
