By Zoila Palma:  Canada has imposed new retaliatory tariffs on approximately US$20 billion worth of American goods, escalating the ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.

The measures took effect shortly after midnight today, following the breakdown of trade negotiations and the Trump administration’s decision to impose tariffs on Canadian products.

The Canadian tariffs range from 15% to 50%, with American milk, perfume, video game consoles, golf clubs, fishing rods, steel, aluminum, jackets and T-shirts among the products facing the highest rate.

Cheese, carpets and certain household appliances will face 25% tariffs, while forklifts and industrial molds will be subject to 15% duties. Some seafood products were removed from the tariff list following pressure from Canada’s lobster industry, CBS reports.

Canadian officials have said the measures are intended to match US tariffs “dollar for dollar.”

Economists warn that the tariffs could particularly affect manufacturers in Midwestern US states such as Michigan and Indiana, as well as dairy producers in Wisconsin and Vermont. The latest measures come in response to US tariffs targeting Canadian products including milk, honey, hockey sticks, alcoholic beverages, plywood, jewelry and other goods.

The escalating dispute affects only a fraction of the more than US$700 billion in goods traded between the two countries annually, but tensions between the longtime allies have continued to grow.
