By Zoila Palma: Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué, resigned Friday, may 1, following mounting pressure from agricultural producers and rising inflation in key food and energy prices.
The executive branch confirmed his departure, noting that Berdegué will remain involved in government efforts by advising on international agricultural matters and supporting strategic initiatives, including ongoing trade discussions, El Pais reports.
Berdegué thanked the administration for the opportunity to serve and pledged continued collaboration.
He also confirmed that Columba López Gutiérrez will assume the post, adding that he had offered his full support to ensure a smooth transition. López, an agronomist and agroecologist with more than three decades of experience, previously served as Undersecretary of Productive Inclusion and Rural Development.
The Mexican government highlighted López’s appointment as historic, marking the first time a woman will lead Mexico’s agricultural policy. She holds academic credentials from the Autonomous Metropolitan University and the National Institute of Public Administration, and has held senior roles in rural development, including leading Mexico City’s Commission on Natural Resources and Rural Development from 2018 to 2024.
The change comes following protests over the last 6 months, with farmers staging demonstrations and road blockades nationwide to demand improved conditions and address rural insecurity.
