Somewhere in a shelter, a dog is doing its very best ‘pick meeee!’ face. There are many ways you can help them.
South Africa (20 May 2026) – Every year, National Rescue Dog Day comes around to remind us that behind every pup rescued is a story that could have gone very differently. The people who change those stories aren’t always the ones in uniforms or with inspector badges.
They’re ordinary South Africans, just like you and me.
Visit almost any animal shelter in South Africa, and you’ll see that kennels are likely at capacity, staff are stretched thin, and the waiting list for dogs (and cats) who need homes forever just keeps growing. For every adoption, there’s often a multitude more admissions.
How do we become a part of the solution and help the many animals in need? International animal welfare organisation, FOUR PAWS, has put together some simple ways anyone can show up for doggies who need some extra love this National Rescue Dog Day!

Foster a dog
Do you have love and room in your home for a rescue, but not quite ready for a forever commitment? Fostering is a wonderful option. You give a dog a safe, loving place to land while they wait for their permanent home. Sometimes, shelters will even provide food supply. Offering your love temporarily matters more than words can say, and it’s a great way to test the waters if you do eventually want to welcome a forever four-legged friend.
Adopt, don’t shop
We live by this mantra and campaign, started by the organisation. If you are ready to grow your brood with a furry family member, please consider adopting over breeders or ‘pet shops’. There are so many incredible dogs in shelters, always, just waiting for someone like you to walk through the door.
Spot a stray? Say something
If you see a stray or abandoned dog in your area, don’t assume that someone else will jump into action or help. Be the hero you know you are, and report it to your local animal welfare organisation. This small action could save a life.
Give what you can
Whether it’s a few rands, a bag of dog food, or a couple of hours of your time volunteering at an animal shelter in your neighbourhood. Local rescues and shelters need all the support they can get, and no contribution is ever too small. Be practical about it. It’s winter right now, so your local shelter could probably do with a few extra blankets to keep kennels warm and cosy.
Talk about it
Yup! Even just sharing a rescue story, posting about adoption or telling a friend helps spread awareness. Someone you know might actually be out to foster or adopt, or even just be willing to show some support.
“Rescue doesn’t only happen in shelters, it happens in communities every day,” says Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa. “Whether it’s fostering a dog, supporting a rescue organisation or simply spreading awareness, every action contributes to a more compassionate society for animals.”
You don’t have to do everything, but doing something is where it all starts.
“South Africans have incredible compassion for animals,” Miles adds. “By taking small but meaningful actions within our own communities, we can collectively reduce the suffering of dogs and build a culture of care, responsibility and respect for all animals.”
