*Lil Nas X is reflecting on the emotional toll of fame and the internal work he says he has had to do to better understand himself.
The Grammy-winning artist described a period in which he stepped back from people around him, including parts of his professional circle. Speaking on TS Madison’s Outlaws podcast in 2025, he explained, “I kind of got away from everybody.” Over time, he has begun reconnecting and rebuilding those relationships, saying he is gradually bringing people “back on board.”
That period of isolation, he said, became a turning point that pushed him toward deeper self-reflection. “I had to really go on a self-love journey again,” he said, per Pink News, adding that he worked on accepting all aspects of himself without trying to constantly force change.
He also spoke about how public attention after coming out affected him more than he expected. “At first it really bothered me,” he said, noting that he was surprised by how intensely people reacted to his personal life. The scrutiny, he explained, left him feeling “paranoid” and “afraid to move too much or be seen too much,” adding, “I felt like the entire world was against me.”
In discussing identity more broadly, Lil Nas X shared how he personally understands his sexuality. He said, “I’m gay, but if something happens, I’m not going to stop myself,” and added, “But mostly I 99% lean towards men.” He also clarified, “never had sex with a girl,” though he has experienced emotional feelings for women that were not sexual.
Outside of personal reflection, Lil Nas X remains one of music’s most recognizable modern figures, breaking through globally with “Old Town Road” in 2019 and coming out during Pride Month that same year.
