*Former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star Lisa Wu is fighting back against serious legal accusations. The “RHOA” alum has been accused of helping defraud a longtime friend out of a home in DeKalb County, Georgia.
Lisa Wu denies any wrongdoing, calling the claims preposterous. The situation remains under active police investigation as of May 16, 2026.
The Allegations Against Lisa Wu
Lisa Wu’s longtime friend, Norma Denise Mitchem, filed a police report last month alleging theft by deception. According to the report, Lisa Wu and her boyfriend, Donald Jacob, allegedly helped Norma purchase a home through an LLC. Norma claims she could not qualify for a loan on her own, so Lisa Wu promised to transfer the deed back once issues like a lien were resolved.
Instead, Norma alleges that Lisa Wu tried to sell the house back to her at a higher price. Norma’s nephew also told police that Lisa Wu and Donald Jacob were involved in the alleged scheme. The story broke widely on May 15, 2026, after TMZ obtained the police report.
Lisa Wu’s Response to the Accusations
Lisa Wu has strongly denied all allegations of fraudulent activity. In a statement to TMZ, the “RHOA” alum said: “For more than 30 years, I’ve built my career and reputation with integrity, professionalism, and hard work. I have absolutely no involvement in fraudulent activity of any kind, and the idea that I would be implicated simply because of people I know or professional relationships, is preposterous.”
Lisa Wu maintains that she was only trying to help her friend. She claims the situation has been misrepresented and that she never intended to commit any crime. As of now, no charges have been filed against Lisa Wu.
Understanding Theft by Deception in Georgia
The legal definition of theft by deception in Georgia (O.C.G.A. § 16-8-3) involves obtaining property through deceitful means with the intent to deprive the owner permanently. In Lisa Wu’s case, the accuser claims she and her boyfriend used deception regarding the transfer of a property deed.
Key elements include creating a false impression or making a promise the person does not intend to keep. However, simply failing to keep a promise is not enough for a conviction. There must be evidence that the person never intended to perform when they made the promise. The penalties range from a misdemeanor for amounts under 500 dollars to a felony for 500 dollars or more.
Lisa Wu’s Past Financial Issues
During her time on “RHOA” seasons one and two, Lisa Wu faced significant financial troubles. In 2007, she filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Between 2007 and 2009, she and then-husband Ed Hartwell purchased a 2.9 million dollar mansion in Duluth, Georgia. They defaulted on the mortgage during the 2008 housing crisis. The home was foreclosed on in August 2009 and sold at auction for 1.9 million dollars, representing a 1 million dollar loss. The couple was evicted.
These past issues are now being revisited by fans. Public reaction to the new allegations has been mixed but leans skeptical toward Lisa Wu due to her foreclosure history. Many social media users have commented “Here we go again” while referencing her 2009 problems. Others are waiting for more evidence, noting that this remains an active police investigation with no arrests made. Reality TV communities on sites like The Jasmine Brand and Reality Tea are heavily discussing the case. Lisa Wu continues to deny any involvement in fraudulent activity as the investigation proceeds.
