Machel’s Surprise Call Gives ‘Biscuit Man’ Another Career-Defining Moment

Andrew “The Biscuit Man” thought his night was over. He had finished his performance at Color Me Red and was already back in the artistes’ room when security suddenly came looking for him. Soca superstar Machel Montano wanted to see him.

For 24-year-old Saint Lucian entertainer Ensley Morille, fresh off a breakthrough Carnival season and Road March victory, what happened next would become one of the biggest moments of his young career.

“That was shocking,” Morille recalled, explaining that he believed his performance was finished when security delivered the unexpected message.

Backstage, Montano greeted him warmly and invited him to return to the stage alongside him. Morille said the invitation immediately brought a rush of excitement, describing the opportunity to share a stage with one of soca’s biggest stars as “a lot.”

The significance of the moment became even clearer afterwards as people repeatedly told him just how major the appearance was. Morille said he remains grateful to Montano for giving him the opportunity.

It was another remarkable moment in a whirlwind rise for the young artiste, whose Road March-winning hit became one of the biggest anthems of Saint Lucia Carnival and helped propel him into the national spotlight.

“Since then, it’s just been happiness and celebration,” Morille said of the weeks following his breakthrough. “It’s been a happy journey.”

The sudden attention is a dramatic change for an entertainer who, not long ago, was working a labouring job and pursuing music without knowing where it would lead.

Morille admitted he never expected his life to change so quickly, saying he released a song and “boom,” everything seemed to happen almost overnight. Even now, he sometimes wakes up surprised by how much has changed.

While mainstream success may be new, performing is not.

Music has been part of Morille’s life since childhood, influenced by a father who regularly played music at home. He began singing at an early age and later spent time freestyling with his cousins, recording themselves on a laptop simply to listen back and laugh.

His first public performance came at secondary school, where a teacher helped him write a remix of a popular song for a school event. After leaving school in 2019, Morille began taking music more seriously, writing songs, collaborating with friends and eventually carving out his own path.

His talent has also extended beyond performing. Morille said he has written songs for other artistes and continues to receive requests from performers interested in his songwriting.

Now, with a Road March title, growing recognition and a memorable appearance alongside Machel Montano behind him, “The Biscuit Man” is looking beyond his breakout Carnival season.

He wants to release more uplifting music, including songs that appeal to older audiences — something he attributes to growing up around his grandmother and older people.

And as his profile grows, Morille says one thing will remain central to his journey: Saint Lucia.

“Everywhere I go, I want to represent my country.”
