A judge-alone trial last week has resulted in a guilty verdict for Mark Willock on a charge of burglary, in connection with a break-in at the home of an 84-year-old woman.

Justice John Spencer presided over the trial and found Willock guilty after rejecting his defence that he had not been the perpetrator and that the complainant was lying.

The charge stemmed from an incident on January 9, 2023, in which Willock broke into the woman’s home. She testified that she recognized him immediately b-ecause he had grown up in the village where she lives.

According to her evidence, she heard her back door and kitchen door rattling and initially thought it was her son, who had visited the house several times before. When she called out and got no answer, she got up and turned on the hallway light leading into the kitchen and that was when she saw Willock, just before he pulled a mask over his face.

Willock is scheduled to be sentenced on June 26.
