A large-scale aerial assault has intensified the war in Ukraine, as Russian forces launched hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles in a coordinated two-wave attack, according to Ukrainian military officials.
Ukraine’s air force said it detected 703 aerial targets during the operation and intercepted 636 drones and 31 missiles, highlighting both the scale of the attack and the growing reliance on layered air defense systems.
Despite these efforts, the strikes killed at least 16 people and injured dozens, with casualties reported across multiple regions, including the capital Kyiv, the southern city of Odesa, and the Dnipropetrovsk region.
In Kyiv, the attack caused extensive damage to civilian infrastructure, hitting residential buildings, offices, and vehicles, and sparking fires across several districts. Emergency crews were deployed to contain the blazes and assist residents.
Odesa also suffered significant damage, with strikes affecting residential areas and critical infrastructure, as local authorities reported casualties and ongoing rescue operations.
Russia said the strikes targeted Ukrainian military-industrial facilities involved in the production of missiles and drones, as well as energy infrastructure supporting the armed forces, while Ukrainian officials emphasized the civilian impact and damage.
Ukrainian authorities renewed calls for enhanced air defense systems, noting the increasing complexity of attack tactics combining ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones in coordinated strikes.
The escalation comes as Kyiv steps up diplomatic efforts to secure additional military support from European allies, amid growing pressure on its defensive capabilities.
Meanwhile, Russia reported a separate Ukrainian drone strike on the Black Sea port of Tuapse, claiming casualties and a large fire, though these claims have not been independently verified.
Analysts say the scale and coordination of the attack reflect an escalation in aerial warfare tactics, with strategies aimed at overwhelming air defenses and increasing strike effectiveness.
As both sides accuse each other of targeting civilian infrastructure, international concern continues to grow over the humanitarian and strategic implications of the conflict.
