Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) says businesses seeking certification and other services will now experience faster processing and reduced physical bureaucracy following digitising of the system.

Speaking on Friday in Lilongwe during the launch of a Management Information System (MIS) that will allow businesses to track applications, laboratory results and certification processes online, MBS director general Simon Mandala said MIS is a major step towards improving trade facilitation and curbing corruption.

He said the platform will also address long-standing concerns from businesses over delays in accessing test results and certification updates.

“We have stakeholders who have had issues with reliability of standards in terms of the time it takes for them to get their test results, the time it takes for them to be certified, but also to follow up and know what is going on. With this system, businesses can access all this information from their offices or smartphones,” said Mandala.

He said the system will significantly reduce delays caused by manual handling of results and repetitive administrative processes.

Minister of Defence Feston Kaupa, who was the guest of honour and represented Minister of Information and Communications Technology Shadric Namalomba at the launch, said the development forms part of President Peter Mutharika’s digital transformation agenda aimed at modernising operations in ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs).

He said government wants all public institutions to embrace digital systems to improve efficiency.

Meanwhile, Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project manager Hastings Ngoma said the 150 million dollars World Bank-funded project supporting the system is being implemented jointly by Malawi and Mozambique to facilitate trade and border connectivity.

He said several institutions under the project are transitioning from manual systems to digital platforms, with the Department of Animal Health and Livestock Development and the Department of Agricultural Research Services expected to launch similar systems next week.

The reforms are building on government efforts dating back to 2013 to streamline border trade processes and reduce reliance on manual systems.
