Rising singer-songwriter CHIRAI has struck a chord with South African audiences with her debut single, Blueberry Skies. The single soared to the top of the Viral – 50 South Africa chart on Spotify, spending 7 consecutive days at number 1. The single also landed in the top 20 on Apple Music’s Top 100 (South Africa) and peaked at #6 on the Apple Music – Johannesburg chart. “I don’t think I’d ever fully expected that kind of response to something I’d created,” CHIRAI shares, “especially with a first release, so I’ve just been trying to take it all in as it comes. Releasing Blueberry Skies has felt surreal.”
Blueberry Skies explores the search for love and self-worth, celebrating the men who make us feel safe and the journey of finding what women truly deserve in relationships. CHIRAI’s music is honest, reflective, and deeply human, a mirror for listeners navigating life’s highs, lows, and overwhelming beauty. “Music is the only way I really understand myself and the world around me.” Music has always been something she has loved, but more than that, she’s always loved writing. “ I was constantly filling old notebooks with stories and poetry. At my core, I’ve always had this need to create, whether it was through drawing, words, or anything that let me bring something to life.” It was realising that she could write music herself that everything really clicked. “It was the first time I could really speak, really say things I’d been holding inside, things I didn’t even know I was holding. Music became more than sound; it became a space where I could exist. I could carry the weight of words, of emotions, of moments in a way nothing else ever allowed. Everything really clicked. When I write music, I’m speaking into it. I’m moving through it.”
Although currently based in Brisbane, Australia, she describes her childhood as a short world tour. “My heritage is from Masvingo, Zimbabwe, but I spent half my childhood in the countryside of Matlock in the UK, and the other half up in the tropics of Far North Queensland, before settling where I am now.” A childhood that truly shaped not only her, but her music. When asked if there was anything people might be surprised to learn about her, CHIRAI shared her huge love for Amapiano. “I love the vibe, it’s impossible not to move to it, and I always find myself getting completely lost in the rhythm and sonic choices. I think in another life I was South African.” Another secret obsession includes watching the South African all-boys school’s war cries and chants online. “They are brilliant! If I ever get the chance to feature that in my music, I definitely will.”
As for the future? CHIRAI is playing her cards close to her chest, not giving anything away at this stage, but for the time being, she is enjoying the moment. “I am so grateful for the response I’ve gotten to the single. The messages I’ve received, with people confiding in me about how the song has impacted them or made them feel, are something I don’t take for granted. This project feels like the beginning of something, for me and the kingdom and all who join along. I’m excited to see where we go.”
Her advice to her younger self is something we could all do well to remember. “The world is full of beauty, even in the small, quiet moments, and life isn’t meant to be simply survived, it’s meant to be lived, fully and deeply. Embrace each experience, each challenge, each triumph, and let them shape you, but never let them harden you. Trust yourself, trust the process, and keep your spirit gentle and curious. You’re doing great, and you’re going to be okay, kid!”
