By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): There was plenty to cheer about for Mexico’s many supporters here in Belize, as El Tri booked their place in the next round of the World Cup with a solid win over Ecuador.
In their Round of 32 encounter, Mexico ran out 2-0 winners. Julián Quiñones got the hosts off to a flying start, finding the net in the 22nd minute, before Raúl Jiménez doubled the lead in the 31st minute. From there, Mexico saw the game out to secure a well-earned victory. Ecuador’s night was made even tougher late on, with Piero Hincapié shown a red card deep into stoppage time, leaving them to finish with ten men.
The win sparked celebrations among Belizean football fans, a great many of whom proudly throw their support behind Mexico. As a neighbouring nation and a fellow member of the CONCACAF region, Mexico has long enjoyed a strong following in Belize, and their progress at the tournament has only added to the excitement.
Now, El Tri and their supporters can look ahead to the next challenge. Mexico will face either England or DR Congo in the following round, setting up what promises to be a compelling test. England represent one of the tournament favourites, while DR Congo have been one of the competition’s feel-good stories, so either matchup would make for a fascinating clash.
For now, though, it is a moment for Mexico fans across Belize to savour. With El Tri still standing and playing on home soil in the region, the World Cup journey continues, and Belizean supporters will be right there cheering them on.
Who do you want Mexico to face next, England or DR Congo? And are you backing El Tri to go all the way? Comment below.
